Recording Consent Guide

01Why this page exists

When you record a lecture you may also record your lecturer and other people in the room. In many countries and universities that requires permission. Notevo shows this warning before your first recording and keeps it in Settings. This page is practical guidance, not legal advice; if you are unsure, ask your institution or a lawyer. 02Get permission first

Check the syllabus and your university's rules; many institutions prohibit recording or require permission.

The simplest route is to ask the lecturer: "May I record the lecture for my own study?" Most lecturers allow recording for personal study.

If you need recordings because of a disability or learning difference, your university's accessibility or disability services office can arrange a formal accommodation.

03Rules differ by country

One-party vs all-party consent: in some places the consent of one participant is enough, in others everyone must agree. Parts of the United States, for example, require all-party consent.

Germany: recording non-public spoken words without consent is a criminal offence under § 201 of the Criminal Code (StGB).

Türkiye: a voice recording is personal data covered by the KVKK, and your university's regulations and rules also apply.

European Union: the GDPR requires a lawful basis and transparency when you process other people's personal data. Recording for personal study is often limited in scope, but sharing and publishing are subject to further rules.

04While recording

Record the lecture only. Do not record other students' private conversations during breaks or after class; use the pause button in the app at those moments.

If the lecturer asks you to stop, or not to record a particular part, pause the recording.

05After recording

Use recordings and notes for your own study. Share with your group only among people taking the same class, and never publish recordings or the lecturer's material publicly.

Raw audio is not shared with groups by default; think twice before turning it on.

If your lecturer or someone who was recorded asks you to delete a recording, delete it: open the lecture and tap Delete. The audio, notes and everything generated from it are removed together.

06Responsibility
